Iron Range and surrounds

December 1, 2009

Had an excellent trip with Ben Blewitt form Cassowary Tours. We started in Iron Range National Park on 30 November (which this report covers) and travelled down to Musgrave and Lakefield (report to follow) ending in Cairns on 6 December. The Iron Range national park was very dry, with very little of the open woodland unburnt...

With Ben’s help we found all the target species quickly. All but the Red-bellied Pitta, they were not back yet (and I don't blame them, just too dry.)  Birding highlights include Spotted Whistling ducks, displaying Magnificent Riflebird, Eclectus Parrots and Palm Cockatoos in the wild, a very confiding Yellow-legged Flycatcher and Chestnut-breasted Cuckoo, the amazing flight display of the starlings at Chilli beach

We stayed at Portland Roads, the food at the cafe was awesome. Had mangoes dropping on my roof one night, the culprit a Spotted Cuscus (the animal highlight of the trip)

I just noticed that the position of this trip report is not correct. It's situated over central Australia. By the way, when you move the pin, it may not update immediately due to caching.
