The Huon Valley is one of Tasmania's best keot secrets. Combine a stay in the south with a couple of nights on Bruny Island and you have an exceptional and extremely affordable holiday. It's a fascinating region to explore, just beyond Hobart.

Day 1 - Sydney to Hobart & the Tahune Airwalk

On arrival, pick up your hire car and drive out of the airport towards Hobart. Then drive south from Hobart to Franklin to the Tahune Airwalk. The drive will take about 2 hours but you’ve plenty of time to spend the whole day there. There is plenty to do and a restaurant for lunch and drinks.

Tahune AirWalk was first opened on the 1st of July 2001. It has since become one of the most visited tourism attractions in Tasmania. On the edge on 1.6 million hectares of World Heritage Listed forest, Tahune AirWalk located in Southern Tasmania is a highly visited destination with something for everyone.

With breathtaking views of the forest canopy, spine-tingling swinging bridges across the Huon and Picton Rivers, soaring like an eagle across the Huon River on our Cable Eagle hang Glider and Tasmanian food and wine in the café; there’s a full day of fun and excitement for everyone.

From there, it’s about an hour to your accommodation in Dover.

We look forward to welcoming you to beautiful Far South Tasmania. Your accommodation is on the waterfront overlooking the beautiful forested hills and waterways.

Day 2 - Dover (B)

After a morning at your leisure (you may wish to visit Dover town centre, the Hartz Mountains (6km) or Little Roaring Bay Beach (7km), drive north towards Franklin. Lunch is at Frank’s Cider Bar & Cafe, situated on the left hand side at the northern end of town. Lunch is arranged for you. You may wish to visit the wooden boat centre opposite.

The rest of the day is at your leisure.

Day 3 - Bruny Island (B)

After check out (10am), you will drive to the Bruny Island ferry at Kettering (1.5h). The ferry trip takes about 15 minutes and it is only another half an hour to your accommodation. Along the way, there are wineries and the famous Bruny Island Cheese company.

Bruny Island is situated off the south-east coast of Tasmania, Australia, about 40 km (45 minutes’ drive) south of Hobart. The island is separated from the Tasmanian mainland by the D’Entrecasteaux Channel and accessed by a vehicular ferry (two during peak periods). These depart from Kettering and operate at regular intervals throughout the day. The ferry crossing takes approximately 15 minutes, during which time passengers may get out of their vehicles and admire the views and possibly seabirds, seals and dolphins.

There is no need to book for the ferry (in fact bookings cannot be made) but you are requested to arrive at the ferry terminal at least 15 minutes prior to the scheduled departure time.

Check into your hotel in Alonnah, just south of the ‘The Neck’.

After dinner, you can drive carefully north to The Neck. If you wait until a couple of hours after dark, Little Penguins will be along the road side. At sunset, Short-tailed Shearwaters appear at their burrows, flying in en masse (though this is just at the time they are arriving from Japan, so may still be a few days early). Further north, a slow drive around paddocks you should see Eastern Quolls, Bennett’s Wallabies and Tasmanian Pademelons. Take great care driving at night as there are a lot of animals around.

Day 4 - Bruny Island Cruise

Depart no later than about 9am to Adventure Bay, where you will be taking a wilderness safaris trip departing from Adventure Bay.

This award-winning 3 Hour Wilderness Cruise explores the rugged coastline of Bruny Island in southern Tasmania. Cruise alongside some of Australia's highest sea cliffs, beneath towering crags and drift up close to listen to the awesome 'Breathing Rock'. Enter deep sea caves, pass through the narrow gap between the coast and 'The Monument' and feel the power of nature at the point where the Tasman Sea meets the might of the Southern Ocean.

Learn about the region’s wildlife, history and landscapes. You’ll seek out dolphins, Albatrosses and even whales (seasonal).

In the afternoon, we can recommend visiting the small museum in Adventure Bay. You can also drive south to Bruny Island lighthouse.

Day 5 - MONA

Return to the mainland via the ferry. Mid-morning ferries off the island don’t tend to be particularly busy. From there, it’s about an hour north to Hobart where you can take lunch before heading to MONA.

Day 6 - Salamanca Market

The famous Salamanca Market is open from 8 am to 3 pm. Lunch can be taken at any of the many restaurants around historic Constitution Dock.

In the afternoon, you will take a cruise on board a Huon Pine ship, a privately owned vessel built in Tasmania and lovingly restored by its owners.

Our Vision is to integrate traditional sailing, conservation and health promotion in Tasmania. We do this by aiming to provide our guests and all who sail with us a unique and personalised Tasmanian experience as they sail on an historic Tasmanian tall ship in our beautiful waterways."

Day 7 - Hobart

Your final day in Hobart is a leisure day.

Day 8 - Depart
