To start with, we'll meet at Cape Schank lighthouse at 9:30am, where we will have set up the biggest pair of binoculars you've ever seen (you kids will be using a step ladder to look through them). Our objective, if the weather is reasonably kind, is to see a few of the 10,000 Humpback Whales that migrate past our coastline at this time of year. It's never a certainty but at about 80m above sea level, it's one of the best vantage points in the state.

Through the binoculars and telescopes we have with us, you'll also be able to see albatrosses, seals, shearwaters and even dolphins.

Your guide, is a whale and dolphin expert from the Dolphin Research Institute in Hastings, who spends a lot of time out on boats looking at these animals. This is the best time year Humpback Whales hit Victorian shores for a few short weeks on their way from the Antarctic to their summer breeding grounds in far north Queensland and beyond.

We'll then drive in convoy to Sorrento on the inner-margins of Port Phillip Bay and board the vessel Bronzewing for a 15-20 minute journey out to South Channel Fort. Built during the war, this man-made island has a network of underground tunnels to explore. It's also a breeding ground for seabirds and, situated in the middle of the Bay, a spectacular place to stand and observe the wildlife around.

We'll fire up the barbecue and have lunch here.

After lunch, we'll take Bronzewing down towards Port Phillip Heads, stopping enroute to look at our colony of seals, the gannets that make the bay their home and hopefully come across some of the Bay's dolphins. On board we will have our resident experts to tell you all about why Port Phillip Bay is such an amazing place - if we're lucky, you'll learn about and see Little Penguins, Bottlenose Dolphins and perhaps even a Black-browed or Shy Albatross up close.

Our boat trip will end back in Sorrento at about 4:30pm, giving you ample time to drive back to Melbourne.
