Your chance to feel the amazing sensation of a wooden ship under sail.

A case of Carlsberg, many handy mates, an eye for beauty and lots of luck coincided to bring the Yukon, a gaff rigged Hajkutter in her first incarnation, to Tasmania’s shores. By the time owner David Nash saw her lovely lines she had hit hard times. He rescued her from the bottom of a harbour near Copenhagen, negotiating hard for her sale – a case of cold beer. After seven years restoration and circumnavigation of the globe, the family- owned Yukon can be found plying the waters beside the lush forests of Tasmania.

Franklin is world famous as a centre for wooden boat building. You will meet the craftsmen and women building traditional wooden boats from Huon Pine and enjoy a calm-water sail on a traditional two- masted wooden sailing vessel. You’ll taste cider produced and exported by a local family who are descendants of Franklin’s earliest settler. At lunch you will savour cider over a meal of fresh local produce, then you’ll travel upriver to the airwalk at Tahune and on the banks of one of Tasmania’s last truly wild and powerful rivers, you can drink in the romantic aspect of the Huon and Picton rivers up close, take a guided walk to a rare living stand of Huon Pines, and experience dramatic views from the elevated treetop walk and swinging bridge.

Highlights:

  • Meet Tasmanian shipwrights carrying on centuries-old craft traditions
  • Enjoy a sail on the Huon River’s glassy-calm waters
  • Visit the cider bar, café and museum for lunch and cider tasting
  • Visit the famous Tahune Airwalk.

DAY TRIP

Your tour starts at 9:30am in Franklin, where you’ll be met by your guide from

the Wooden Boat Centre. The 1⁄2 hour tour will take you through a working waterfront, where you’ll meet ship-builders working on current projects and learn about tools, techniques and materials, including Huon Pine.

At 10:30am, after a short break to use amenities, get coffee and browse souvenirs, you’ll be guided along the jetty to your sailing ship and welcomed on board by the Captain. For the next 11⁄2 hours you’ll enjoy hot drinks & biscuits in the fresh air, hoist sails and make your way slowly along the Huon River, learning about the fascinating history of the ship and Franklin.

Arriving back in Franklin at midday, you’ll be escorted to the cider bar, café and museum that displays history of Franklin’s earliest settlers. You’ll discover the significance of this tiny town in global exploration and two world wars. You’ll dine on a lunch of local produce and taste cider made from apples grown here. From 1:00pm, you can drive to Tahune along winding forest trails. This is the origin of timbers still used in wooden ship building today.

Arriving at the famous airwalk, you have all afternoon to explore and enjoy the café, amenities and displays. Optionally, you can take the Huon Pine walk (check on arrival to see if it is one of the day’s guided options), before driving back to Hobart through some of the state’s most beautiful scenery.
