WILDIARIES WORKS PERFECTLY WITH MOZILLA FIREFOX

If you are having trouble with the cascading menu on the field guide, the chances are that you are using Internet Explorer 8 and / or you do not have Javascript operating. We know the site works perfectly on Firefox and would recommend you download and install this. You can use Firefox instead of Internet Explorer. Follow this link:

WHAT CAN YOU DO WITH WILDIARIES?

JOINING MULTIPLE WILDIARIES WEBSITES

You can join multiple Wildiaries sites with your one account.

To find out what Wildiaries sites are currently available, visit http://www.wildiaries.com. If you can't find what you're looking for, email us and we will set one up for you personally. Click "Join this site" from the menu bar at the top of the main page then follow the instructions. Once joined, the new site will appear in the drop-down list in the dark green navigation bar above the webpage. From here you can move between all your sites and even view your trips in once location by clicking "All".

Creating Trip Reports on Multiple Species

By joining more than one site, you can create a trip for multiple groups. For example, if you create a birding trip report and you want to add butterflies, go to "Edit Trips" and click "edit" for the trip you want to share (alternatively view your trip and click "Edit Trip Days and Locations"). Below the table you will see a button "Share with another site". First you will need to join another site (see above).

Click the button, enter the title of the site that you are a member of (e.g. Butterflies), then click "Add". You can remove sites by clicking on the "X" next to the name. In this case, to add Butterflies, enter the Butterflies site, find your trip and add butterflies as you would have added birds. You can also tag butterfly images. You can repeat this process across as many sites as you wish.

Sharing Trip Reports Between Sites

You might enter a trip report in birds of your local area but also want to share this with the national site. To do this, follow the same instructions as for "creating trip reports on multiple species" (above).

USING WILDIARIES WITH YOUR EXISTING BLOG OR WEBSITE - AND DRIVING TRAFFIC FROM WILDIARIES TO YOUR BLOG

Linking from your trips and images back to your own blog

Wildiaries is a trip-report facility and you don't have to use the "My Home" page in Wildiaries if you already have your own blog or website. When you sign in and create a profile, you can upload your own image ("Avatar") that is used to identify you in trips and images within Wildiaries. After signing in, go to "My Profile" in the top menu bar and below your Avatar image, click the "Change Link" button. Enter the website of your choice. From now on, viewers who click on your Avatar will be taken out of Wildiaries to your own website.

Embedding Latest Trips in Your Own Website or Blog

You can embed the latest trips from the Wildiaries home page or your own latest trips from any given Wildiaries site in your website. This is done using "iframe" code. Click on the button "Embed Latest Trips in Your Blog" to get the code. For instructions how to do this, you will need to consult the help menu for your blog site. For example, in "Blogger" it is a simple matter of clicking on "Customise" then "Add a Gadget", choosing "HTML/Text" then embedding the code. You may need to modify the width and height in pixels within the code to suit your own website.

CREATING A TRIP

After signing up and logging in, click "+New Trip" and you will be taken to a page where you can enter the title, date and location of the trip, plus a summary description. More information to explain how to do this is contained within that page. Don't forget to add your location and date immediately as this is used to set locations and dates in multiple-day / multiple-location trips. If you don't do it now, you may have to come back later and change it.

After creating the trip, enter any additional information for the first day (by default all trips have one day) and you will be taken back to a table where you can re-enter individual days and add photos and sightings.

HINT: You can enter a basic trip to start and upload your photos. You can always come back and enter additional sightings and information by day at a later stage.

HINT: To keep your reports looking good, avoid copying HTML into the description field. If in doubt, open Notebook in Microsoft Windows and paste from there. This ensures that the information is inserted in Plain Text. If you copy HTML it carries over styles and affects the layout of your pages.

Collaborating on a trip with friends or clients

Go to "Edit Trips" and click "edit" for the trip you want to change (alternatively view your trip and click "Edit Trip Days and Locations"). Below the table you can choose to "Share with another user" by clicking the button. Type the name (or nickname) of the person you want to collaborate with then click "Add". You can also remove people from the list by clicking the "X" next to their name in the list that appears above.

Your trip now appears on that user's edit trips page and they can add photos and sightings to your trip. Their photos will appear alongside yours but identified with their own Avatar image.

UPLOADING PHOTOS

Click on "+Photos". Photos are uploaded to a location. If you want your photos to appear in the field guide, make sure you specify the location the photos were taken (so your records appear in the right place!), then add the species to the table of sightings .

Try to keep photos roughly 4:3 (slightly rectangular) in shape and less than 1MB in size. Wildiaries reduces images to 800px (longest edge) and compresses them, so for best results, prepare images by cropping them to about 1000px (longest edge) and saving as uncompressed JPGs.

Tagging Images

When signed in, you can click "Edit Image Data" beneath your image. This will take you to a page where you can add a species tag (this is essential if you want the image to appear in the fieldguide next to the species of interest) and notes.

Custom Galleries

Wildiaries automatically creates galleries for your trips and species and puts these on the right hand side of your home page. However, you can also create galleries of your own. To add an image to a custom gallery, go to the image of interest and click "Edit Image Data". Use the drop-down menu supplied at the bottom.

ADDING SIGHTINGS

Sightings are added by following the "Add Views and Observations". If you've already created your trip, go to "Edit Trips", click on "Edit" next to the trip of interest (or if you are signed in, click on "Trip Days" within the trip page itself). This will take you to the

FEATURES BOXES

In "My Home" and on your own trip pages, you can feature images or trips. Where it says "Feature Box", hover your mouse and click the edit button (you must be signed in). Follow the instructions in that page.
